The Refuge

“By introducing a variety of art modalities through fluid and flexible projects in an informal group setting, Sheri
and the AWAH team have helped youth gain a safe platform to share their untold stories, express brokenness
in their lives, and explore their feelings in a non-threatening way.

They have worked to create opportunities for youth to get curious about art making and experience childlike
joy. This has been an important part of the youth’s journey through healing. Many of these youth raised
themselves… and kids aren’t supposed to be good at that. They lost the opportunity to have an exploratory,
play-filled, childlike environment growing up. This came second to survival.

They have facilitated a new sense of power and control. This has been particularly important because much of
what the youth encounter is quite the opposite – from bars and barriers to red tape in access to services
required to meet the basic of needs. There are no rules here. No grammar, no eligibility requirements, no push
to stay inside the lines, rather, encouragement, compassion, and a gentle nudge into lovingly digging bit
deeper.

Sheri and the AWAH team really took the time get to know and understand this special community. They are
sensitive and thoughtful and express beautiful care and concern for their clients. They see the potential,
talents, and value in each youth, which reflects in their work. By assisting youth in opening up and expanding
their sense of self they have instilled the idea that there is hope, that change is possible and that it can even
be exciting!”
