What is Expressive Arts Therapy?

Expressive Arts Therapy (EXAT) is a psychotherapeutic model that is relational and is the skilled practice of using art modalities such as imagery, play, storytelling, poetry, dance, music & percussion, mindfulness, drama, creative movement, dream work and visual arts together in an integrated and intuitive way which fosters human growth, development and healing.

The journey of exploration in an EXAT model emphasizes the PROCESS of creating rather than the final product of the creation. Creative expression and use of the imagination helps one to examine their thoughts, emotions and body responses to a given situation in a different manner than normal.

In a guided self-discovery process you can find new strengths and capacities and in somewhat of a narrative format, you can tell a different or new story about yourself or your situation.

Play and imagination are the starting place for all things. Creative expression is also a deeply spiritual connection. Expressive Arts offers a non-verbal expression of often “difficult for words” thoughts and emotions allowing you to observe your internal dialogue through a more creative lense.
