Hello! I’m Sheri

Registered Psychotherapist,
Expressive Arts Therapist
My approach to Psychotherapy is through a combination of Talk Therapy and Creative Therapies.  Creative therapies could include Sandtray Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, >Eco Therapy (walk and talk therapy), or a combination of all.  I engage in creative therapies at the willingness of the client.  My sessions are client-centered, attachment and trauma informed, explorative and intuitive.  I offer a safe and interactive atmosphere that is intuitive, relational, creative, and at times collaborative .  I am led by you in what you bring to each session, and in how each session unfolds.  We will discuss what is going on for you, and when/if you are ready, we will move into a discovery process through the arts. The art we create is “low skill, high sensitivity” and focussed on your process not a final product, so there is no previous artistic experience required.  I facilitate that part of our session, so you begin from a place of ease.

I work with both individuals, and groups.  So should you require some discussion about a group you would like me to work with, please contact me to discuss more of the details.

I look forward to discussing your particular situation, and your needs.

My Expertise

Psychotherapist and Expressive Arts Therapist

I have over 9 years of experience as a Psychotherapist and as an Expressive Arts Therapist (ExAT) and I also use Sandtray Therapy in sessions.  I believe in therapy in non-traditional natural sessions as well and often meet with clients for mindful eco-therapy that includes walks and hikes in nature at the pace the client can participate.

I trained at the CREATE Institute in their Creative Integrative Arts Therapy Training Program.  I am a member of OEATA (Ontario Expressive Arts Therapy Association), and am Registered as a Psychotherapist through the College of Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).

I am a practicing professional artist specializing in visual arts through a wide range of mediums, and have been a performance artist as Sunflower the Clown (www.sunflowertheclown.com).

I am the founder of arts-based charity Art With A Heart Inc.   The charity is currently located in downtown Whitby.  Art With A Heart Inc. delivers therapeutic art programming to a variety of marginalized audiences throughout Durham Region and beyond. (www.artwithaheart.ca)

I have worked towards her Bachelor of Theology in Child and Family Ministries – where I have had a deep interest ignited in human development, psychology, lifespan development, and attachment theory.  I have completed a course in Clinical Supervision under Danny Seto, MPsy, MDiv, BEdsy and am qualified to offer Clinical Supervision as an RP.

I have completed Level I and Level II of DBT Training with Dr. John R. Wagner of DBT Institute in Vancouver, as well as an 8-week training program in the use of Expressive Arts with trauma through CREATE Institute.  I have also completed 30 hours of SEUS (Safe and Effective Use of Self) – Satir Method training with Sandra Finkleman.

Testimonials

P.W., Private Client

“My art therapy is deeply and profoundly impactful. I’m am able to marry feelings, colour, shapes and art together to produce images that allow me to step back and approach my situation(s) with a new perspective. My therapist often shares insights to my work that expands a deeper dialogue.

Sheri is intuitive…sharing the right poem/inspirational quote or speech; just the right words/gifts to carry me into the next week. She’s not afraid to go to the dark places with me… the most broken areas of my heart. She is teaching me…about…me. She is presenting a new perspective so I can see me…I’m learning to trust and allow a re-connection – spirit to spirit.

Expressive Art Therapy is a safe emotional expression… It catches me in my emotional freefall and gives me a footing to rebuild and heal. It’s an activity that takes my trauma to healing (creating a healed experience), rather than manifesting dis-ease.”

Alexis Smid, Operations Manager, The Refuge

Sheri and the AWAH really took the time get to know and understand this special community. They are sensitive and thoughtful and express beautiful care and concern for their clients. They see the potential, talents, and value in each youth, which reflects in their work. By assisting youth in opening up and expanding their sense of self they have instilled the idea that there is hope, that change is possible and that it can even be exciting!”

Ciera, Social Services Student

“Since being part of expressive arts I have learned a lot about myself, and have learned how beneficial this therapy is.  It is an amazing approach to helping someone creatively express and deal with their inner issues and struggles.  Expressive Arts is different than other types of therapies because I feel it goes deeper than normal therapy…the approach allows someone to visualize, and show themselves and others how they feel about certain topics.”

Brittany, Social Services Student

“I have learned a lot about myself, I also learned that keeping everything bottled up is not good.  It is better to let go and express yourself because you will feel better about it in the long run .”
